    Posted: 01 Sep 2010 at 4:38pm
The talk of the fall week race was our friends from Missouri getting speeding tickets on 11 E in the spring. A photo enforcement ticket was received in the mail once they got home. We went to dinner in Johnson City obeying all the reduced 45 mph speed zones (traps). Got home and promptly got a speeding violation from Morriston, Tn. This is on 25 E north on our way back to Chicago bypassing  Knoxville. Here is a sign of the times. I had not gotten a speeding ticket in over 20 years. Until 2 years ago when the economy started to falter. Since then I have gotten 3 of them. 2 in Indiana and now this one in tn. These money mak'in speed traps were just written about in Chicago for the Red Light cameras we have increasing rear end accidents. I am writing this just after almost rear ending someone in a light rain who slammed their brakes in front of me at a red light.(carrying heavy load in van) I thought this was mostly a Northern Greed Thing and am surprised it has corrupted the south. Been traveling to tennessee regularly to visit wife's relatives , BMS, etc for the last 10 years. My driving has not changed , and if anything I am probably driving slower and more cautious with age. What is changing is the greed of our government agencies. Beware , they are everywhere. Heard bout all the thoughts of cancelling these traps during race week etc., but their greatest "pool" is Nascar fans , so do not expect a brake,(HA !) if anything they will become more numerous. In these hard times, there answer is to abuse the average man under the guise that they are making the world a safer place. What would you want to bet that during the City Council meeting of any one of these towns, they discussed how long and how many tickets it would take to" pay -off" or get a "return" on the cost of the "system". This therefore would make it a monetary decision? How much thought do you think went into the talk of how much safer it would make their city? Has anyone stopped going to Bristol because of this problem, or is anyone thinking about stop going to races because of this abuse. We are !!OuchAngry

Was he suppose to run the red light?  Were you planning on running the red light also?
If you don't speed or at least just do a few MPH over the speed limit, then you will not get any tickets.
I don't understand why people complain about speed traps and red light cameras.  Don't drive like a mad man and you will not have any problems.
Don't blame it on the city council.  It is not like they are hiding these cameras.  They put signs up notifying you that they are there.  What more do you want?????

Watch your following distance, expect a "stale" green light to turn,  synchronized stop lights typically work best at one MPH below the posted limit.  Just a few of the things I have learned over 30 years of driving.  Oh yeah, the yellow light does not mean Slam the gas to the floor!
Knock on wood....  The only speeding ticket I have had in the past 15 years I got in a Ryder lease unit that was supposed to be govern'd at 70 but I got a ticket for 71.  Stopped by the Ryder shop and had them plug it in and sure enough, it had been set wrong.  All but two of the LEO's that I know will give you 9 over but don't be doing anything stupid while traveling between the speed limit and 9 over...

See you all havn't been to Oak Ridge TN if you ever go there just be careful of those cameras at the bottom of the hills. 1 mph over will cost you, as far as the red light if you hit the intersection line as it turns yellow you will be getting a citation in the mail lots of people won't even go there to shop anymore.

Funny, I drove back and forth to every race during the August weekend, that is SIX trips past the Piney Flats camera trap and never once got "snapped".  Hmmmm, I wonder why that is????? Maybe because I was OBEYING the law!

I agree with you completely northernredneck!!!!!! These are nothing but a money racket (round here....$90 of every $100 ticket goes to the company that installed the cameras by their contract to install/maintian the cameras-ussualy for 3 years) & redlight cameras have decreased t-bone accidents   but have increased rear-end collisions by about 10 times!!!!Angry
Showed up for the party and stayed for the race!I hate BUSCH so bad I made my wife shave hers!

Thanks bowhunter, your highlighting of "Obeying" the law suggests that I speed on purpose and perhaps even enjoy breaking the law. Not true. I also do not care to endanger the life of my grandson who was with us this Bristol trip. These cameras operate on the premise that no one is allowed to ever make a mistake, and if you do, you pay. I'm sure you never "accidently " went past the speed limit or missed a posted sign. Never ever broke a law, even mistakenly? All I am trying to say is this is a bad idea to increase revenue to local municipalities, based on monetary decisions , not safety issues, off the backs of "nascar fans". I realize this is a complicated issue probably not easily discussed in this forum and certainly not with anyone who profits from this type of revenue like employees of local, or  state government. And I cannot beleive that some folks get a ticket for 1 mile over the limit. No one can say that is not ridiculous. The $50.00 I have to spend for the ticket is saved by keeping our travel trailer in Bristol for free thanks to some kind people. I understand I am saving double or triple that in gas by not hauling our trailer back and forth to Bristol. So, it is not having to pay 50 bucks as much as a sorry A$$ way to increase revenue.

Thanks for responding racechaser. No, with the load I had I did not expect this guy to "slam" on the breaks so far from the light. When he did, I slid a little, but the rain will do that. He seemed paranoid about something as far away from the light that he start breaking( maybe a previous ticket) and then that is what reminded me about the article in our local papers about the increased revenue, but also the red light cameras causing rear end accidents. ( see tadpoles post above) There is an organization up here filing a lawsuit  to eliminate these cameras. No, I do not belong to it ,or any other organization. Just agree with those that are opposed to this sort of revenue, maybe at the cost of safety. And then to put speeding cameras around Bristol ? Just was wondering if these type of tactics are gonna scare away any race fans. Or maybe it already has? I cant believe how much money goes to the camera co. tadpole. Thanks for your info also. At that rate it may take longer than I thought to pay for those camers. Then again maybe they dont pay for them. Maybe they are rented. Shocked

Gee, I'm sorry, it is just hard for me to find sympathy for anyone caught speeding anywhere near Bristol on race weekend when there were these kind of threads floating around:
Not to mention anyone who has ever been to a race anywhere knows that law enforcement cracks down in the vicinity of the track.

Thanks terry t for the response. Whenever I see" Yellow" I just gotta floor it, I hate that color. I see you are from Indiana, so you may like this story. My first ticket after 20 years without one was 2 years ago on our way to Bristol, just me & the wife, on a lovely early Sunday morning. On route 41 towards Clarksville Tn. a road we traveled numerous times to visit relatives. Joking and laughing about how great it was to be on one of the 2 weeks we take for vacation every year (both at Bristol) a motorcycle passes me like I am standing still. Behind that an SUV  followed it very closely. Not even thinking about it I just kicked her up a notch assuming I am going too slow.(big mistake) No more than a minute or 2 later on comes the police car lights. As a young officer approaches my window, an elderly officer slowly sneeks to the wife's side hand on pistol peering into the side door of the van. I am informed of my speeding ticket and asked where we are going. I question the 2 vehicles that just passed us at 80 or 90 miles an hour and the young man states he stopped" us" because they figured we were trying to catch them. Being an old harley man, I dont think I would have ever caught them. Think the young guy was a rookie and the old man told him just get the easy guy.(less stress for the old-timer teaching a rookie) I remember when I thought they always got the leader of the pack. Other ticket was some small town on the way to pick up materials in Anderson, In.( a backroad.) Stopped me and a local as we took turns passing each other and he could not believe we did not know each other. How long was he following us before we finally passed the limit ??

I understand what you are saying bowhunter, but I am not looking for sympathy. We spend all week at Bristol , so I heard and read about all the speed traps and their vicinities. Did not need to click your thread. My ticket was in Morristown Tn., halfway to knoxville but a good by-pass for those going north.(was) And in the last 2 years have been to Atlanta, Iowa, Kentucky, Nashville, and Talladega, some more than once and no problems all driving as I wont fly. That may be another reason it seems to be a concerted effort around the Bristol track, so much so that there has been articles about them turning the cameras off during race week. Someone posted something about that one time. Now that is what I want to hear.Clap

Oh Yah race chaser, in addition to letting us know where the cameras are it would be nice if they sent us a $ 100.00 gift certificate to be used towards our next violation or towards monies spent in their local community !! Those signs are like the one I seen at a gambling casino about how their slots pay 110% , telling you up front, how bad your chances really are, and that it is a big rip-off.

Don't usually have time to blah! blah! blah! my views, but have taken the day off heading up to Wisconsin for our daughters wedding. Hope my friends in wisconsin heed my warning about 25 E as  I know some take it. I will warn others at the celebration. Oh yeah, I will obey all laws and speed limits and promise to behave like the Nascar fan that I am. Enjoy the weekend one & all. PUSH THE BUTTON  !!!  Cruise control that is, at the posted limits.

Northern, you are so spot on with your post that i can't help myself and I know you wanted to let it rest but there is another angle to this.  Those law enforcement officers and politician would be a lot worse off without BMS and it's patrons.  While no-one says they should simply ignore speeders, setting up traps and mailing letters after the race does not exactly say "Welcome to Bristol".  Your initial post would make a good editorial in the local paper.    And to those law abiding citizens who say "Obey the law"  I have to say,   Really???  I would never be so proud.  I can't think of anyone who always obeys the law and going 50 in a 45 is the least of our worries.  A better use of those officers would be patroling looking for DUI and other real crimes.

I'm not so proud.  I said that I OBEYED the law near Bristol over the race weekend because I KNEW there would be increased enforcement.  I speed....quite regularly I guess.  I'm bad to travel at 5 to 10 OVER the posted limit on interstates.  However, I do that as a result of a conscious decison and I KNOW that if caught there will be consequences.  It becomes a matter of do the risks out weigh the rewards.  In short everyone has control over their right foot.  Either make it a little lighter and stay on the good side of the law or not and be prepared to pay consequences if stopped.  It's simple really, either way like we say here in the mountians "quicherbichin"

Do you think they only have the red light cameras and speed traps around bristol and only on race weekend?  I have the cameras all over my town and there is no increase in rear end collisions.  They have speed traps all the time on different roads.  They have even used undercover and civilian cars for the speed traps.  I have even seen where they sit on bridges with binoculars to bust speeders and people with drugs.  They set up a sign a long distance away saying there is a drug check point ahead and then watch for people putting their stash up before getting there, even though there is no checkpoint.
I agree with Bowhunter.  Don't speed or run red lights and you will have no problems at all.  It really is not that hard.  I am no angel, but it is crazy to blame getting busted on anything other then you broke the law.

That should be fine, as long as you don't transport any illegal produce or animals across state lines.

Just got back from Wisconsin for the daughters wedding. Cost'in enough so wife & I thought we would do the speed limit all the way. What a joke !! Cannot believe it , but I think every vehicle in the states of Illinois & Wisconsin passed us by. This was even in construction zones. Holiday weekend & we cannot remember even seeing a state trooper. Where were all them honest law abiding citizens. Just got done watchin the Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions. Lions seem to have gotten ripped off by of all things an instant replay review. Does this mean CAMERAS LIE !!!! Paid my 50 bucks to Morristown, Tn. before we left town being the law abiding citizen that I am, but will call them to see if they watched the bears game.

So Right Montepower, and if road spikes dont work they can put in those cables and hooks that catch the planes on aircraft carriers. That will stop red light offenders from getting away, will assure they had their seat belts onOuch (lets not even get into that violation of rights), and then the law can check for DUI, drugs, &  illegal fishing lures etc. All this while giving the local transmission shop some work !! LOL
